Description

The 21 Guilds of Florence, described as taking part in the San Giovanni and Impruneta processions. Every Florentine citizen who wished to take any part in public life had to enroll in one of the Arti (Companies or Guilds). There were twenty-one of the guilds, divided into the Greater Arts, seven in number, and the fourteen Lesser Arts (at one time divided as the five Intermediate and the nine Lesser Arts). The seven Greater Arts were : the lawyers and notaries, the Calimala or dealers in foreign cloth, the guild of wool, the bankers and money-changers, the guild of silk or " Por Santa Maria ", the doctors and apothecaries, and the furriers and skinners. The Lesser Arts included the butchers, blacksmiths, shoe makers, builders, retailers of cloths, wine merchants, inn-keepers, tanners, provision dealers, saddlers, locksmiths, armourers, carpenters, and bakers.
