Description
Emmanuel Menahem Deutsch was a friend of George Eliot's and George Henry Lewes's. Some critics have speculated that he may have been a model for Mordecai in Daniel Deronda. Deutsch gave Hebrew lessons to Eliot and answered her questions regarding Judaism, Jewish history, and the significance of the land of Israel. Deutsch and Eliot shared a close relationship between 1867 and his death in 1872 according to Eliot's letters.
