Cass, Godfrey

Title

Cass, Godfrey

Description

Squire Cass's eldest son and Eppie's real father; and amiable and affectionate, but irresolute and morally weak, young man. "That big muscular frame of his held plenty of animal courage, but helped him to no decision when the dangers to be braved were such as could neither be knocked down nor throttle. His naturl irresolution and moral cowardice were exaggerated by a position in which dread consequences seemed to press equally on all sides." Although he is in love with Nancy lammeter, he had, in a weak moment, contracted a secret marriage with Molly Farren, a barmaid. When his wife, who is bringing their little child to Raveloe to expose him, dies as Silas Marner's door, he does not acknowledge the little girl, but allows Silas to keep her. This death removes the only obstacle to his marriage to Nancy. Years later, unhappy because they have no children, he wishes to acknowledge Eppie as his daughter, but she refuses to leave Silas.
