Pullet, Mrs. Sophy

Title

Pullet, Mrs. Sophy

Description

Mrs. Tulliver's favourite sister; a tall, good-looking, well-dressed lady, much given to tears, who is thought tolerable by the Tulliver children "chiefly because she was not their Aunt Glegg". "It was not everybody who could afford to cry so much about their neighbours who had left them nothing; but Mrs. Pullet had married a gentleman farmer, and had leisure and money to carry her crying and everything else to the highest pitch of respectability." She pities Mrs. Tulliver's bad luck with her children, so unlike the Dodsons, and helps to send Maggie to a boarding school "which would not prevent her being so brown, but might tend to subdue some other vices in her." For the original of Mrs. Pullet as one of the Dodson sisters, see note under Dodsons.
