Houghton, Fanny Evans (1805-1882)

Title

Houghton, Fanny Evans (1805-1882)

Description

Fanny Evans Houghton was George Eliot's half-sister. Until her marriage to Henry Houghton, Fanny kept house for her older brother Robert. She was a firm believer in family honor, and followed the lead of her half-brother Isaac in cutting off all communication with George Eliot, after her relationship with George Henry Lewes was revealed in 1857. Though the two never reunited, Fanny continued to read everything her sister published. Fanny appears to have shared George Eliot's intellectual curiosity.
