George Eliot Portrait Gallery
What’s here? These are all the extant portraits of George Eliot created during her lifetime, collected here for the first time in 2019. They are searchable by title, creator, and composition date.
What about other George Eliot representations? Other depictions you may be familiar with were almost certainly created after her death and based on the portraits she sat for, which you’ll find here.
We have been collecting illustrations of Eliot's works for years and want to share them. The next phase of development for the George Eliot images gallery has already involved the purchase and scanning of several very rare nineteenth-century editions, now in the public domain. This project also involves identifying the artists and engravers of the illustrations whose names rarely appear in the illustrated editions.
Related visual projects involve adding images of Eliot’s homes and places associated with her life in England, which will become part of our "George Eliot’s Travels" section, where visitors can interact with maps and various visual representations of her travels abroad. In our George Eliot’s Relationship Web section, we are adding portraits of 150 people she knew, including family members, friends, and business associates, except for a few individuals, whose portraits we have been unable to locate. If you can help us locate those images (Edith Simcox, for example), please write.
