Naumann, Adolf
Title
Naumann, Adolf
Description
A good-natured German painter in Rome who admires the beauty of Mrs. Casaubon so much that he asks Mr. Casaubon to sit for Thomas Aquinas, in order to have an opportunity of painting Dorothea. The character of Naumann was probably suggested by Johann Friedrich Overbeck (1789-1869), a German artist who worked at Rome 1810-1869. (See Jacobs, George Eliot, p. 72).
